How to Spread Bet on Bank of New York Mellon? |
If you decide to invest in firms like Bank of New York Mellon then one solution could be to spread trade on the Bank of New York Mellon share price.
Looking at a spread trading website like Selftrade Markets, you can see that they are currently showing the Bank of New York Mellon Rolling Daily market at $27.37 - $27.42. As a result, an investor could put a spread bet on the Bank of New York Mellon share price:
Going above $27.42, or
Going below $27.37
When financial spread betting on S&P 500 equities you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you invest £3 per cent and the Bank of New York Mellon share price moves $0.21 then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £63. £3 per cent x $0.21 = £63.
Note that you are also able to invest in this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no predetermined settlement date for this market. If your trade is open at the end of the day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next trading session.
If you allow your position to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:
Rise - then you'll pay a small overnight financing fee, or
Fall - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

Bank of New York Mellon Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Trading Example |
So, if we consider the spread of $27.37 - $27.42 and assume that:
- You have done your analysis of the markets, and
- Your analysis leads you to feel that the Bank of New York Mellon shares look like they will increase and move above $27.42
Then you may decide that you want to buy at $27.42 and invest, let’s say, £3 per cent.
With such a bet you make a profit of £3 for every cent that the Bank of New York Mellon shares rise higher than $27.42. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Bank of New York Mellon market goes lower than $27.42.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
If after a few days the stock moved higher then you might want to close your trade in order to lock in your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread could change to $27.78 - $27.83. In order to close/settle your position you would sell at $27.78. Therefore, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:
P&L = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = ($27.78 - $27.42) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = $0.36 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = 36¢ x £3 per cent stake
P&L = £108 profit
Trading shares, by spread betting or otherwise, can go against you. In this example, you wanted the share price to rise. However, the share price might go down.
If the Bank of New York Mellon share price weakened, against your expectations, then you could close your trade to stop any further losses.
So if the market fell to $27.00 - $27.05 you would settle/close your trade by selling at $27.00. Accordingly, your loss would be:
P&L = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = ($27.00 - $27.42) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.42 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -42¢ x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -£126 loss
